No vehicle can possibly check every box for every shopper in Bassett, Danville, Greensboro, or anywhere else, but the 2024 Kia Sorento Hybrid makes an excellent attempt. It’s rare to find a seven-seat crossover SUV like the midsize Kia Sorento that’s as attractive and desirable as it is versatile and practical. But the Sorento goes even further with a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain and generous levels of standard equipment.
Many rivals of the 2024 Kia Sorento Hybrid can make it difficult for shoppers to choose the most suitable model and powertrain combination from a raft of confusing options. But the Sorento keeps things about as simple as they could possibly be. Even though the Sorento is available in Hybrid and Plug-on Hybrid versions, there are still only three models to choose from. The Sorento Hybrid is available in an entry-level EX trim and a higher-specification SX Premium model, while the Sorento PHEV is only offered in the SX Premium trim.
Despite its midsize dimensions and classification and its small family, the interior of the Sorento Hybrid is surprisingly spacious. While the third-row seats are the standard midsize compromise, the front and second rows have all the space you could reasonably ask for. With 41 inches of legroom and colossal door openings, getting in and out and sitting in the Sorento’s second row is about as comfortable as it gets.
The Sorento Hybrid EX is front-wheel drive in its standard form with the option of all-wheel-drive, but the Hybrid SX Prestige and the Sorento PHEV SX Prestige have AWD as part of their impressive standard specifications.
Powering all three versions of the 2024 Kia Sorento Hybrid is a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and full parallel hybrid system. The combined output of the system under the hood of the Sorento Hybrid is 227 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. But the Sorento PHEV also has a 13.8 kWh battery pack that delivers 261 horsepower, 258 lb.-ft., and an electric-only driving range of up to 32 miles. A six-speed automatic is now the standard transmission for the Sorento Hybrid and PHEV, and fuel economy comes in at 39 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 37 mpg combined for the Hybrid, or up to 79 MPGe with the Sorento PHEV.
The standard specification of the Sorento Hybrid EX is impressive, and most shoppers would be more than happy with it. But maybe that is only until they see the specification they could have with the SX Prestige. On top of the generous EX specification, the SX Premium adds LED projector headlights and DRLs, rain-sensing wipers, 19-inch alloy wheels, a fully digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch LCD display, 12-speaker premium Bose sound system, genuine leather and cloth-trimmed seats, 14-way power driver’s seat, heated rear seats, and heated and ventilated front seats.
The 2024 Kia Sorento Hybrid might not be the ideal SUV for every shopper, but it could be the ideal SUV for you. It’s rare for a family-friendly, spacious, seven-seat SUV to be as stylish and desirable as this, and that’s before you get to the fantastic hybrid fuel efficiency.
