More and more electric vehicles (EVs) are appearing on the roads of Bassett, Danville, and beyond, and the 2024 Kia Niro EV is a fantastic model for anyone considering buying their first EV. The Niro has been electrified with no combustion engine-only version since its inception, so this fully battery electric variant is a natural progression for the impressive second generation of the compact Kia SUV.
The 2024 Kia Niro EV is available in a couple of trim levels. But if you think that inevitably means different battery sizes, different ranges, and vastly different MSRPs, you can relax because that isn’t the case. The all-new second-generation 2024 Niro EV comes in the imaginatively named Wind and Wave versions that share identical electric, zero-emissions powertrains.
Something else that both models share is their fabulous exterior styling which was all-new last year and delivered extra class and a more premium feel to this impressive compact EV SUV. One of the first things that catches the eye is the striking silver or black boomerang body panel that Kia calls an air blade, which extends all the way from the roof to the rear wheels. The new Niro EV shares plenty of styling cues with other current Kia models, apart from the front where there’s no need for an actual grille as there’s no combustion engine that requires cooling.
The 2024 Kia Niro EV is among the fastest, quietest, and most efficient models in the Niro family and is expected to account for more than a quarter of all Niro sales very soon. The electric motor and battery provide the 2024 Niro EV with 201 horsepower and 188 lb.-ft. of torque, and the same 64.8 kWh battery and motors are found in Wind and Wave trim levels. The charging port conforms to the SAE J1772 and Combined Charging System (CCS) standards, which means you’ll be able to charge it almost anywhere you locate a charging point. When a DC fast charger is available, up to 80% of a full charge can be achieved in around 43 minutes. The EPA-estimated economy is a combined 113 MPGe, and the estimated range on a full charge of the battery is a useful 253 miles.
Regardless of whether you see the 2024 Kia Niro EV as a crossover or more of a tall hatch, it’s hard not to be impressed by the generous 39.8 inches of legroom available for anyone sitting in the rear seats, very welcome for those on longer journeys beyond the boundaries of Rocky Mount and Greensboro. The second-row legroom in the Niro EV is actually greater than you’ll find in the second rows of many three-row crossovers. The cargo volume behind the 60/40 split rear seats is equally generous with 22.8 cu.-ft., compared to the 19.4 cu.-ft. of the previous generation of the Kia Niro.
Entry-level Wind trim level features include dual-zone climate control, a power tailgate, roof rails, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, and a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Wave trim adds the likes of a premium Harman Kardon audio system, a Digital Key, perforated SynTex seat trim, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and plenty more for not a great deal more money.
The 2024 Kia Niro EV is an attractive, practical and desirable compact crossover SUV, and its fully-electric powertrain could be seen as a bonus, rather than its entire reason for existing. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned EV driver or someone looking for a first experience of all-electric mobility. We’re sure you’ll love the Niro EV when you come for a test drive with Nelson Kia at 4730 N Virginia Ave, Bassett, Virginia.
