Plenty of sedans are falling by the wayside due to the ongoing onslaught from SUVs. However, the 2024 Kia Forte is steadfast in showing there’s more to life than crossovers if you want a compact vehicle in Bassett, Danville, Rocky Mount, or Greensboro, and you don’t need a third-row seat. The interior is spacious for a compact car; the exterior is modern and stylish; the powertrains are competent and efficient; the standard features are generous at every level, and the whole package adds up to superb value for money.
There are five different trim levels to choose from in the 2024 Kia Forte lineup, and the temptation to upgrade to the next higher one will always be hard to resist. Every model has an impressive standard specification for the money, including that class-leading Kia warranty. However, unless you buy outright and you’re on a tight budget, the price difference between the entry model and the top-of-the-range Forte is a gap you’ll always find tempting to bridge.
The Forte lineup for the 2024 model year starts with the LX, then the range goes to the LXS, GT-Line, GT, and finally to the range-topping GT manual. It would be tempting to assume the GT-Line and GT-Line Manual trim levels are the same apart from automatic and manual transmissions. However, you’ll need to look at the individual specifications closely, as certain features you can have with the automatic are not available if you prefer the driver-engagement of a manual transmission.
Plenty of compact cars stick the same powerplant in every model in the lineup, but Kia offers buyers a choice of engines in the 2024 Forte. If you choose the LX, LXS, or a GT-Line version of the compact Kia sedan, the standard engine is a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces a competent 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque. Those three models all send their power to the front wheels through Kia’s Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT).
The alternative powerplant is a 1.6-liter turbo-four which is standard with the GT and GT Manual versions of the 2024 Kia Forte. The turbo-four ups the power ante to 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque, and this time it gets to the front wheels through either a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) with paddle shifters or a six-speed manual. With the DCT most buyers will choose, the 2024 Kia Forte can get you from 0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds.
The standard specification is impressive across the lineup, but the steel wheels of the LX and small price increments will probably encourage most retail buyers to look higher. The LXS gets 16-inch alloy wheels, but it will be hard to resist going to at least the GT-Line to enjoy the likes of a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen (8.0-inch with LX and LXS), dual-zone climate control (instead of manual air conditioning), and SynTex and cloth sport seats. And as well as a larger touchscreen, the infotainment system in the GT-Line and higher also features navigation, Kia Connect, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Of course, the next step is the GT and GT Manual, which get you the 1.6-liter turbo-four engine and plenty more. While the GT Manual can’t have some of the safety and driver-assist features the GT gets with its automatic transmission; the GT Manual makes up for it with the likes of a 320-Watt Harman Kardon premium audio system with Clari-Fi and an integrated subwoofer, LED interior lighting, and SynTex sport seats without the cloth. The new model year GT-Line trim level now comes standard with the driver assistance systems that were previously part of the optional Tech Package.
The 2024 Kia Forte has everything you need for up to five people for journeys of all types and all durations. The interior is spacious, comfortable, and well-equipped, and there’s plenty of driver enjoyment on offer with turbocharged engines and even a manual transmission option.
