What’s not to like?

You’re unlikely to go shopping for a new car in Bassett, Danville, Rocky Mount, or Greensboro and set out to buy something in the same class as the 2023 Kia Stinger because the Stinger is simply in a class of its own. The Kia may be a car that defies easy description, but it’s also a car that’s incredibly easy to like and want. At first glance, the 2023 Kia Stinger looks like one of those four-door midsize sedans with a sloping, coupe-like roofline. However, some would categorize it as a five-door liftback, while others might consider it a grand tourer. Whatever you want to call it, the Stinger is a sensational car that demands closer attention.

A straight-up choice

It might not be as straightforward as take it or leave it when it comes to the 2023 Kia Stinger lineup, but it is a straight-up choice between two versions that will appeal to different buyers for different reasons. Both models exude the same core values of style, performance, and practicality, and both versions represent relative value for money for what they deliver.

The two available models are the GT-Line and the GT2, and although they look very similar at first glance, the differences are pretty considerable. Although you might not see it by looking at the two variants, the GT2 costs around 40 percent more than the GT-Line. Both models look sensational and drive and perform superbly, but the GT2 is a much more performance-orientated model, while the GT-Line delivers robust performance, great looks, and superb specification for a very attractive price.

What’s going on?

2023 Kia Stringer powertrains and performance

The most significant difference between the GT-Line and GT2 versions of the 2023 Kia Stinger is what’s going on that you can’t see by looking at them. The GT-Line has recently benefitted from a power upgrade, and its 2.5-liter turbo-four engine now produces an impressive 300 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. Instead of a turbo-four, the GT2 boasts a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 that puts out 368 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque. Both models send their power to the front wheels in standard form through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but both can be upgraded to AWD if you prefer.

However, the GT2 also gets a standard limited-slip differential, electronically controlled suspension, Sport Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) Rack, Brembo brakes, and the available AWD system includes Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control. As you might imagine, the two models also diverge in terms of fuel economy. The GT-Line with standard rear-wheel-drive gets you 22 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined, which compares to 18/25/20 mpg for the GT2.

A split decision?

It would be easy to say the GT-Line is a budget version of the 2023 Kia Stinger and the GT2 is the real thing, but that would be a little disingenuous. It’s probably true that those who buy the GT-Line will choose that model because they don’t want to spend a significant extra for the GT2, or perhaps their budget doesn’t stretch that far. However, a detailed look at the standard specifications will soon tell you the GT-Line is no poor relation.

Both models have a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. They also have wireless smartphone charging, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and leather upholstery. It’s just that the GT2 does a lot of things bigger and better, such as Nappa instead of standard leather, a 7.0-inch instrument display instead of a 4.0-inch display, and a 15-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system instead of the GT-Line’s nine-speaker audio. The GT2 also features a head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats, heated outboard rear seats, and plenty more.
