When you expect to spend much of your time driving on the streets of Bassett, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro and squeezing into the tightest parking spaces, it’s hard to beat the 2023 Kia Soul. The 2023 Soul is the latest version of a subcompact crossover SUV that defies that subcompact classification with a deceptively spacious cabin. The Soul is as practical as it is unique and affordable, with a flexible cabin, good fuel economy, and a class-leading manufacturer warranty.
Even though the exterior styling of the 2023 Kia Soul is quite a departure from the two generations that came before it, it’s still not a model you’re likely to mistake for anything else around at the moment. The Soul remains a relatively small vehicle with a tremendous character that makes it stand out from the crowd. The front of the 2023 Soul is undeniably contemporary with its narrow grille and headlights, but it still has the same recognizable outline that’s almost a trademark of this ever-popular crossover.
There are four trim levels in the 2023 Kia Soul family. The range starts with the highly affordable LX trim level, and above that, you then have the S, GT-Line, and the top-of-the-range EX. Most retail shoppers will likely look beyond the entry-level LX with its steel wheels to higher specification models. The range-topping EX makes a particularly strong case for itself, as the price difference between the S and the EX is temptingly small.
It probably wouldn’t fit the Kia Soul philosophy to have a raft of powertrain and drivetrain options. The Soul is a straightforward model, perfectly illustrated by its modest four-trim-level lineup and single powertrain across all models. The 2023 Kia Soul isn’t available with all-wheel-drive as that extra capability can be an unnecessary expense in the Soul’s natural urban jungle environment, which is why all four models are exclusively front-wheel-drive.
The sole engine powering all models is a 2.0-liter inline-four producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to the wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The EPA rates the fuel economy of LX, S, and GT-Line versions of the 2023 Kia Soul at 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined. However, the highest-specification EX trim level is even more fuel-efficient, with ratings of 29 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 31 mpg combined.
The standard specification of the 2023 Soul is generous at every level, and the difference between the base and top models is less immense than it is with many of the Kia’s rivals. The price difference between the S trim and the EX is relatively modest, making the range-topper look exceptional value for money. The EX trim comes with standard 18-inch alloy wheels, premium cloth trim, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Navigation, Kia Connect, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
Every model gets a good set of standard safety features, including Forward Collision Avoidance-Assist w/ Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist. And you only need to go one level above the base model for Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Lane Change Assist to become part of the standard specification.
