A watershed moment

It was always going to take something special to convince some people in places like Bassett, Danville, Rocky Mount, and Greensboro that electric vehicles really are the future of driving. Many early electric vehicles have flaws that rely on shoppers overlooking them and focusing on their environmentally friendly credentials to get a foothold in the market. However, the 2023 Kia EV6 is an all-electric crossover SUV that works on every level. The EV6 looks sensational; it has a spacious and cutting-edge interior; the performance ranges from excellent to sensational, and it’s at least as practical as anything in its class.

Show-stopping styling

The easy option for bringing a new electric vehicle (EV) to the market is to take an existing model and replace its internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack. That’s rarely, if ever, ideal, which is why the 2023 Kia EV6 gets built on a bespoke EV platform that has allowed designers and engineers to produce an electric crossover SUV that delivers on every level.

Instead of the one or two high-spec trim levels new EVs commonly have available, there are six trim levels in the 2023 Kia EV6 lineup. The entry model in the 2023 EV6 family is the Light (RWD), and then you have the Wind (RWD), Wind (e-AWD), GT-Line (RWD), GT-Line (e-AWD), and the all-new top-of-the-range 2023 Kia EV6 GT.

New 2023 Kia EV6 powertrains and performance

You might assume that you can have a car with sensational performance that’s thrilling to drive, or you can have a vehicle that’s kind to the environment, but not both. However, the 2023 Kia EV6 begs to differ, especially with the all-new GT trim level. The EV6 is the complete package because the styling is gorgeous, all models are superb to drive, and there’s more than enough power and performance available for even the most enthusiastic drivers.

There were three EV6 performance levels last year that are still available. They are the entry-level model with a 58 kWh battery pack that puts out 167 horsepower, and two theirs that utilize a more substantial 77.4 kWh battery pack. In its single-motor rear-drive format, the 77.4-kWh EV6 develops 225 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, while in dual-motor, all-wheel drive form, the output increases to a thrilling 320 horsepower and 446 lb.-ft. However, the EV6 GT takes EV SUV performance to another level with a system producing 576 horsepower and 545 lb.-ft. of torque. The new EV6 GT also gets an upgraded chassis, which it needs to handle all that power and get you from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 161 mph.

An outstanding package

You could approach the EV6 from a skeptical point of view, looking for its flaws, but you’ll have to look very hard indeed to find anything that resembles a weak point or compromise. The sporty exterior styling gives way to a cabin that’s as copiously spacious as it is futuristic and cutting-edge, the driving experience is outstanding, and the power and performance speak for themselves. The range on a full charge of the battery is either 274 or 310 miles, depending on the model, which is more than competitive in its class.

And if you think the way the EV6 looks and its impressive all-electric powertrains are a glimpse of the future you can drive today, wait until you check out the standard and available features. The dual 12.3-inch screens for controlling many of the onboard systems of the 2023 Kia EV6 might be exciting but expected these days, but where else will you come across an augmented-reality head-up display?
