If you were to sit down a draw up a list of attributes a vehicle needs to have to be considered the best non-luxury three-row midsize crossover SUV in America, you’d probably come up with something an awful lot like the sensational 2022 Kia Telluride. The Telluride may be classed as midsize but it looks and feels a lot like a full-size SUV, especially when you’re inside it. With its handsome looks, great space, impressive list of standard and available features, eight-seat capacity, and class-leading warranty, the 2022 Kia Telluride really is the complete package.
Buyers have four different trim levels to choose from in the 2022 Kia Telluride lineup. The entry model in the range looks like sensational value for money, especially when compared to its major competitors, but even the top-of-the-range model looks remarkably affordable at the price. The first model to consider is the Telluride LX, and from there the range goes to the S, EX and finally to the range-topping SX. What’s perhaps most remarkable about the Telluride is the fact it would be so easy to mistake it for a luxury SUV with much higher prices, even at the entry level.
There’s a real air of practical simplicity about the 2022 Kia Telluride, and that philosophy extends to the powertrain. Even though this is classed as a midsize SUV, a Telluride fully loaded with passengers and cargo is a substantial vehicle and that means an equally substantial engine is required to avoid it feeling underpowered. There are definitely no worries in that direction as all models come equipped with a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that produces 291 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque. And if you want to tow with your new Telluride, all-wheel-drive versions are rated to tow up to a maximum of 5,000 pounds.
In its standard form, all four versions of the Telluride send that power to the front wheels through an electronically-controlled eight-speed automatic transmission, but all models can be upgraded to an Active On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system with AWD Lock and Snow Mode. All models also feature a Sportmatic Sports Shifter, Drive Modes, and Torque Vectoring Cornering Control, regardless of whether you have front- or all-wheel-drive.
Every Telluride comes standard with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control, while SX variants also come with automatic high-beam headlights, front parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display is available. All this as well as the Telluride’s rugged construction have helped earn it a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and Top Safety Pick status from the IIHS.
Even the entry-level LX model comes standard with all that active safety kit as well as the likes of a full complement of power features, eight-passenger seating capacity, keyless start, a newly standard 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start and reclining third-row seats.
The 2022 Kia Telluride tears up the rulebook when it comes to what you can expect from a non-luxury midsize crossover SUV, especially for the very modest asking price.
