What Do Different Vehicle Safety Ratings Mean?

Before you make that next vehicle purchase, you want to make sure you know the car you are getting is safe. Here are a few safety rating details you'll want to get familiar with before laying out all that money on a new vehicle.

The NHTSA is a federal government organization that uses standardized testing on vehicles. One reason many people can easily identify with this rating system is that they use stars, similar to that when rating products online. To that point, the safety ratings usually will be comprised of five stars for the best and a single star for the worst. Exact meanings of rating do depend on the safety test.

The IIHS is funded by insurance companies, so they tend to do things a little different than others. There is no star system, it is a point system based on poor, marginal, acceptable, to good being the best.

Come to Nelson KIA and you can test drive all the new vehicles on the lot and ask us about safety ratings too.
